Global Warming

This without a doubt is a complex subject and theoretically requires all nations to pull together. We must each do what we can from the smallest amount of adjustment in the home to that of large industrial plants. Already it may be too late to prevent irrepairable damage but to ensure that we hand this planet onto future generations we must tackle this issue on the broadest base possible. This may mean even implementing untested means in the hope that a multitude of actions will have some effect to stem the erosion of the planet. Here are some ideas being bandied around in no particular order for both business and domestic consideration....

  • Energy efficient light bulbs.
  • Reducing lighting levels in offices.
  • Use of timing devices to switch lights off.
  • Turn off the standby facilities on consumer goods.
  • Avoid the use of inefficent appliances such as photo copiers.
  • Prohibiting the use of vehicles over 1400cc.
  • Keep your freezer as full as possible
  • Use of electric vehicles or hybrid cars.
  • Use home produced goods instead of imports.
  • Take someone to work or school to avoid doubling up.
  • Avoid the use of cars for work and go by public transportation
  • Stop the vast transportation of goods from far away places, eat local produce.
  • Eat fresh produce raw and avoid cooking.
  • Rinse hand-washed dishes in cold water instead of hot.
  • Utilisation of solar, wind and sea power.
  • Insulate pipes, roof and floor spaces.
  • Line curtains wherever you can.
  • Fit draught excluders to doors and letter boxes.
  • Economic use of water, local recycling in the home, such as water butts.
  • Enhance the recyling of waste and redundant goods.
  • Use your over economically. Use a toaster instead of a grill.
  • Insulate your home in as many ways as possible.
  • Regularly descale your kettle to make it more efficient.
  • Use fluorescent lamps in lieu of tungsten ones in areas like the kitchen and garage.
  • Avoid flying if you can, business people should use internet conferencing when possible.
  • Cut down on emissions into the atmosphere such as bonfires, oil and driven machines.
  • Planting wholesale forests wherever possible.
  • Reducing the need for petrol byproduct plastics such as wrapping material.
  • Ban the importation of goods from countries that do not have a global warming policy.
  • Turn off lights when not in use.
  • Replace fluorescent lamps with the more efficient T8 types.
  • Use compact lamps instead of tungsten ones.
  • Use sensors on to maximise the use of daylight.
  • Check temperature controls on your central heating and immersions regularly.
  • Monitor timer to make sure the heating is not used unnecessarily.
  • Fit thermotstatic valve to all your radiators.
  • Insulate cavity walls.
  • Avoid the use of supplementary heating.

At present there seems no real alternative to bulk supply of energy other than nuclear fuel, reluctantly, in the short term we may have to adopt this strategy. We would however advocate the use of hydro power and other hybrid schemes wherever feasible.
