Local Taxation

central taxation

The Poll Tax was an attempt to distribute the cost of running local government more fairly. Council Tax fails in this respect and the single resident pays dis-proportionally to the amount of service they receive. This party will persist in its opposition to Council Tax in the present format. A local Income Tax would be fairer, together with a cap for senior citizens. This party agrees with the National Pensioners Convention that the chancellors attempt to compensate over 70s with a one-off payment is ineffective and inadequate.

There is a suggestion that a local income tax instead off, and or, coupled with a sales tax would be more advantageous than the existing system based on the value of housing stock. As everybody in the community has access or use of the facilities provided then everyone should make a contribution somehow. The Poll Tax, met with much resistance in the form of riots, was an attempt to redress the inequality in the Council Tax. There has to be a more efficient way as about 25% of council tax receipts go into the pension fund for their employees. A sales tax would retrieve some revenue from people visiting the area. If advantaged people living in expensive houses were seen to be paying more income tax, local as well as national, then there would be less dissension amongst those more unfortunate.
